New Turn 4 Bleachers-Great View!!
The K-C Restrooms are getting a facelift, (center) the extension of the turn 3 wall is complete, and the videographers crow's nest is in place.
Above_-It has only been a month and a half since the gates closed for the last time in 2003 but K-C Raceway is not yet ready for hibernation!! The above pictures from left to right show the turn three and four footer for the retaining wall extension of some 100-plus feet, a wide angle view of the same footer and forms being set, a panoramic view from the backstretch that shows new ditching and the media extension/crow's nest; and finally a close-up of the new video/crow's nest. These are just a few of the behind the scenes improvements/plans that are on-going at the present time. New Pictures 4/27/03
All New in 2003!!! Improvements! More improvements: 3-17-03
Below-The new press box is nearing completion! It will be a prominent figure in the K-C Landscape. Also, nearly 20 feet of fill dirt has taken away the big drop off from turn two and the backchute is in for a similar make-over.
Above: Turn four seating and additional seating construction and excavating in turn four are in progress. 2-01-02
Above: The new tower is going to be huge-a landmark site for all to see upon entering the speedway. Notice how the steel infrastructure dwarfs the pick-up. And it isn't going to stop here.
Even the ticket booth is getting a make-over. A new roof and additional ticket sales windows are being installed to accommodate all the upcoming fanfare for K-C's 50th anniversary season.
The above pictures show the extension of the turn four wall poured this Thanksgiving week. The new wall extends some 30-plus feet beyond the end of the old wall, providing a protective barrier for the over 1,000 extra seats to be constructed before the start of the season. At the left above is some of the new clay that has been worked into the track. The new surface is working in nicely and prepared to set for the winter, making for a great racing surface this 2003 season.
Above:Footers are being dug for the new tower piers and concession area. The excitement is building with all the off-track improvements, but the fans WILL NOT be disappointed in the on-track excitement that is coming in 2003!!!
Above are a couple shots of the massive pit expansion and general views of the track with the new clay. It's winter, but the track is "busy" all the way around. At Far right- Behind the grandstands. See Story below!
Above and below Where's Bruce's perch? Scoring tower gone! Right before the new tower goes up! Massive fill, This is one of the many areas that extends along the backchute, where a massive backfilling job is in progress, thus leveling off the steep ledge in turn one and making way for a site for more bleachers on the backchute.Above right-Click on the above to see the future sight of about 1,000 more bleachers in turn four, (left) and on right where the turn four wall will be extended to accommodate the new bleachers.! And new pit pond.
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-It has only been a month since Jim Nier's K-C Raceway closed its doors for the 2002 racing season, but the very next day the heavy equipment was in action preparing for the 2003 "50th Anniversary Season". Anticipation for an historic 2003 racing season is already approaching a climax, as aggressive bartering and scheduling among the track, sanctioning bodies, and sponsors are in progress. The result will be an exciting adventure for both fans and drivers in 2003; an adventure that will make 2003 a memorable anniversary season. The anniversary show in 2003 celebrating the K-C moniker will also celebrate the 50 years of existence of the speedway, which was once known as Atomic Speedway for its proximity to the Uranium Enrichment plant in nearby Piketon. With an explosive name, the speedway opened its doors with a bang in the summer of 1953 and has operated every year since (except 1984 when ownership was in transition). New owner Jim Nier has been taking an aggressive proactive approach to making the physical facility a first-class endeavor. Nier said, "We've talked to many fans and drivers and have taken their input into consideration. Our goal is to make K-C Raceway a family-oriented operation. We want our fans to feel safe and comfortable, and a place where you can bring the kids and have a great time." "We are in this for the long haul," said Nier. "The success of motorsports lies in the next generation. The improvements we hope to make are intended to make our facility user-friendly." Catering to the needs of the fans, K-C will be building a new concession stand and adding playground equipment for the kids in the turn four area. Although the racing schedule may designate which improvements take place first, plans for a new state-of-the-art concession area are in the works. Even the already tasty menu has been upgraded to include barbequed ribs and barbequed chicken. Plans for at least a 1,000 new seats are set for the turn four area, plus the most noticeable change will be the new scoring tower and press box. The first-class design features air conditioned box seating for sponsors with a separate area for scoring and the press. Piers for the new press tower were poured during the week of October 28. The drivers will also have something to look forward to in that K-C has expanded its pit area substantially, and is filling the area next to the backchute for greater safety. New clay has been put on the track to restore the banking and widen the track racing surface. Already last season, a new pagoda and pit tower was built. Additionally, the track ponds have been dredged from three-feet deep to approximately 16 feet deep. Most importantly, fans can expect a banner year for racing in 2003. Many surprises are in store as far as what will happen, and according to one track spokesmen this season will be the "biggest ever" as far as purses and the prestige of the events taking place will bring.
